Legionnaire’s disease is a form of pneumonia that can prove fatal. It is contracted by breathing in tiny water droplets (aerosols) or droplet nuclei (particles remaining after water evaporation) contaminated by concentrations of legionella bacteria. Legionella bacteria is in all natural water and therefore is almost unavoidable in domestic and commercial systems which can become breeding grounds.
Under Health and Safety Law, all organisations must counter the risks from Legionella that could affect their employees and members of the public and take appropriate action.
An employer or a person in control of premises must:
• Identify and assess sources of risk
• Prepare a scheme (or course of action) for preventing or controlling the risk
• Implement and manage the scheme
• Appoint a person to be managerially responsible
• Keep records and ensure effective control

The approved code of practice for the control of legionella is as follows; "The Control of Legionella Bacteria in Water Systems (L8)" 2001, applies to the control of Legionella bacteria in any system where water is stored or used and there are means of creating or dispersing water droplets which may be inhaled, creating a risk of exposure to Legionella bacteria.
