OHS Case Study Legionella and Water Hygiene Management
Overview: OHS were selected by the internationally renowned client The Co-operative Group, to work in close partnership with their own Property and Health & Safety teams in relation to the Control of Legionella and Water Related Management. Objectivity, expertise and a practical approach to achieving compliance were key requirements in their search for a leading independent consultancy. OHS fulfilled all the criteria and provided added value including a twenty four hour fully supportive helpline.
Sector: Retail. Location: Nationwide – 3000 sites from the Shetlands to Cornwall. Project duration: Rolling Contract. Key Performance Indicators: With Legionella being a high-profile risk it is important to deliver accurate results to the client within very tight timeframes. These expectations we constantly meet in all areas of services delivery.
The OHS Role: We formulated a detailed Legionella Policy and Management Plan which we are assisting the in-house team to monitor, develop and manage. We reviewed the Client’s procedures in relation to the control of Legionella and provided expert and practical advice to assist in achieving Compliance. We are undertaking a series of Risk Assessments in accordance with L8. We have advised on an action plan and the implementation and management of any remedial works identified, including microbiological and temperature issues, during the Risk Assessments. We are assisting with the development of a monitoring strategy, including the monitoring of domestic systems, in order to measure the continued performance of the systems in place and define any improvements that are needed as well as methodologies and timescales for completion. Consultative advice includes reviewing cooling systems and disinfection services across all sites this process is continually reviewed for maximum compliance. Significant results: The Introduction of an extensive recording system in relation to the Control of Legionella. Structured undertaking of Risk Assessments nationwide in accordance with L8. The management of any remedial works identified during the Risk Assessments. We have also compiled a training needs analysis in relation to Legionella Control and are in the process of delivering training to support this at a variety of levels within the organisation.
Conclusion – How OHS Adds Value: The work undertaken by OHS significantly reduces risk to the organisations workforce within their distribution, commercial and retail premises and to the general public across all their sites and is targeted to save considerably on insurance premium costs and any large legal fees that non compliance could attract.
